Eaton County Jail, Michigan's oldest continuously operating jail, was established in 1838, just two years after the county was organized. The original jail was a log cabin located in the county seat of Charlotte, behind the courthouse. It was replaced in 1842 by a more substantial structure made of brick and stone. This jail served the county for over 50 years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1894.
